Why Stamping Is a Good Option for Decorative Concreente Driveways

Posted on

Do you have a driveway that needs a makeover, or are you researching options for a new driveway? Stamped concrete might be just the solution. Stamped concrete provides a decorative effect that delights the eye, and when you combine this with the hardiness of concrete, you have a winner.

Diverse Textures

Stamping concrete is a decorative treatment that alters the surface texture so as to mimic other materials such as slate, brick and even wood. After the concrete is laid, stamping mats or textured rollers are used to create different effects before the concrete hardens.

For example, one option is a brick border stamp that can be pressed into the preset concrete creating an imprint that imitates a brick border. Other options are a random stone stamp set, a medieval cobble stamp and a wood plank stamp.

Another way the concrete is stamped is to use a roller, similar to a roller used in painting. However, the rollers used in stamping are textured; some options are a slate texture roller stamp, a woodgrain texture imprint roller and a worn brick texture roller.

Assorted Colours

Stamped concrete can also be coloured to enhance the effect. Colouring and staining methods are often combined in a sophisticated way to capture the variegated and organic appeal of natural textures.

One common method is to use colour hardeners; colour pigments are placed over the concrete before the stamping begins. Some standard colour options are Venetian pink,  platinum grey, dark red, tan and walnut. These colours are often combined to mimic the authentic multi-toned look of materials such as slate and stone.

Another method of colouring concrete is staining; two common types are acid-based and water-based stains. Acid-based stains react chemically with the concrete in an organic way that emphasises the nuances of the particular concrete surface--in the same way staining wood brings out the uniqueness of the surface.

Stamping is an attractive and flexible option for decorative concrete driveways. It can be used for both new driveways, and existing driveways. If your existing driveway does need a makeover, a layer of new concrete is simply poured over the top and the treatments are then applied. Concrete is renowned for its durability, so your decorative concrete driveway is sure to provide many years of enjoyment and service.
